Hits and Misses

My "Hits"

1. I chose an article called, "Is Global Warming Real?" from National Geographic. This article explains about how the temperature change is affecting the climates around the world. The author indicates some of the reasons why the temperature is rising, such as the greenhouse gases and some particles from the volcano. I chose to read about this topic because I've studied about how the greenhouse gases are affecting the environment in the world during my biology class. I was also interested to read the articles from National Geographic since I liked how it focuses on the natures of the world.

But just like how the author mentioned in the article, the debate still continues. Different people believe different facts that could be the possible reason for the global warming. The author of the article didn't specify the reasons for the global warming, just the evidences that the places on earth are warming up. I can agree to the author's explanation about how greenhouse gases and natural phenomenon are the causes of the temperature change. Some others might believe that these changes are just happening naturally since the earth went through many environmental changes since billions of years ago like the Ice Age. They might say, "If there was a time when the earth was cold, there should be a time when the earth was warm." I don't really agree to this idea because there is no evidence that the Ice Age and other events have caused the global warming. But I can also agree to the fact that greenhouse gases are causing the global warming because humans have invented advanced technologies, like cars, that required the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

2. I always get really annoyed when people ask me about my background. Most of the people who asked me about it tend to assume my ethnicity that is not always true. It was always, "You're Chinese, right?" or "I can tell you're Chinese or Korean". Sometimes they even went up to me and said, "Nee Hao". But because it's extremely complicated, I always answered them quickly which wasn't a hundred percent correct. I've only explained the entire story to someone who I felt comfortable sharing.

I learned from this experience that it makes people feel offended by assuming their cultures. But I know that people aren't trying to make me feel upset. It gave me a chance to reflect back to what I'm saying to other people to make sure if they're okay to say. But people don't always take something the way I take when I say it to them. I might have said something offensive to someone without noticing how they felt about me saying them. Even though I felt sad and stressed about them every time, now I feel like I need to appreciate them for it.

3. My research topic is about Islamophobia. Islamophobia is a type of non-Muslim people who are disrespecting the Muslims. Islamophobia is a serious problem in our modern society especially because of the many violence that Islamists did around the world, who claim to be a Muslim. In my research paper, I will answer my research question how do violent acts done in the name of Islam go against the principles of Islam?  How has this contributed to Islamophobia?

Just about few decades ago, people didn't really know anything about Islam or things that are related to Islam unless you are Muslim or related to Muslim society. But in our society that we currently I've in, people have made many mistakes about Islam and so does the Islamists. They are both misinterpreting in their own way. I found it interesting to try to find out what was going through the Islamophobic society.

The three writings above are my "hits" because each of them shows my strong opinions about the topics that I presented. They all showed how I grew over the year compared to the writings that I've done in middle school.

My "Misses"

1. I always get distracted by technologies especially when I'm working on my homework. Sometimes I get distracted by them even if I have homework that takes me hours and hours. Rather than looking at random websites, I choose to turn on some music to focus on my homework. It works well for the first few minutes but not for long. I start to focus on the music that I'm listening. So the good option for me is to not use any technologies at all.

But if I don't use any technologies, I can't focus either because I need some noise to make me focus. The best time for me to do my homework and assignments is when I'm rushing and stressing myself out. I would have a pressure of finishing my homework on time which causes me to focus for a long time. But it's a common sense that stress can be bad for your body.

2. Rihanna - Umbrella

I chose the song "Umbrella" by Rihanna because I liked the rhythm of this song. In this song, the rhymes and an anaphora contributes to the strong relationships between one and other.

You're part of my entity, here for infinity

The words "entity" and "infinity" rhymes because they both have the tee sounds. It contributes to the song by its strong emphasis toward the "you" in the lyric. It allows the audience to recognize the emotion for a certain person in the song.

The other important rhyme in this song is in this line,

Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we still have each other

The why in this line creates an emphasis toward the nature and the relationships. It shows that the rain made their relationships better and created deep bonds.

Come into me
It's pouring rain
It's pouring rain

Come into me
Come into me

It's pouring rain
It's pouring rain

The Anaphora in this line creates a warmth between them two. The part "It's pouring rain" contributes to the dark, quiet scene. But "Come into me" makes the audience sound like they're together when it's raining.

3. Out of all the presentations, I found interesting about the one about diversity in BlackBox. She picked two people from the audience to complete the puzzle. She started talking right after they started it so I didn't know why she asked them to do it. But she then started talking about the designs of their puzzles. One of them was an illustration of the world map and the other one was just green. I couldn't imagine how hard it was to finish a puzzle that just have green pieces.

I found it interesting because it was a great idea for her to show the diversity. It would be really boring to have the pieces with just a single color, but it would be fun and unique to have colorful pieces with the special designs for each of them. Finding a good example to show the audience is challenging because it has to be sophisticated and understandable.

The three writings above are my "misses" because I felt like I couldn't explain throughly enough that the readers can understand the important information that they needed to know. I thought that my writing about the distraction from the technology was the most confusing, which led to one of my "misses".

Portrait of me as a writer now

I am a writer who tend to include tons of vague details that mess up the story even if I don't want to. The unnecessary things just come...
